Lever Arm:
The lever arm is one of the most visible and accessible components of a manual slack adjuster. It is a mechanical lever that extends from the slack adjuster housing and is often cylindrical or hexagonal in shape. The lever arm serves as the interface for adjustment. When a technician needs to adjust the brake shoe clearance, they use a suitable tool (such as a wrench or socket) to rotate the lever arm. Turning the lever arm in one direction increases slack (loosens the adjustment), while turning it in the opposite direction decreases slack (tightens the adjustment).

Adjusting Nut:
At the end of the lever arm, you'll find the adjusting nut. This nut is threaded and is responsible for controlling the position of the brake pushrod. As the lever arm is turned during adjustment, it engages with the threads on the adjusting nut. By turning the adjusting nut in either direction, you can effectively control the distance that the pushrod travels when the brakes are applied. This, in turn, determines the brake shoe clearance.

Spline (optional):
Some manual slack adjusters include a spline component. The spline allows the adjuster to securely connect to the brake chamber's pushrod. This connection ensures that the slack adjuster can transfer the force applied by the pushrod to the brake shoes effectively. Not all manual slack adjusters have splines, but they can be essential for maintaining a secure connection and ensuring reliable brake performance.

Dust Boot or Cover:
Many manual slack adjusters are equipped with a dust boot or cover. This protective component serves to shield the internal components of the slack adjuster from environmental contaminants such as dirt, dust, water, and road debris. Keeping these contaminants out is crucial for maintaining the longevity and performance of the slack adjuster. If the dust boot becomes damaged or compromised, it should be replaced promptly to prevent contamination of the internal components.

Internal Mechanism:
Inside the housing of the manual slack adjuster, there is a complex internal mechanism. This mechanism includes gears and other components that transmit the rotational force from the lever arm to the adjusting nut. It also ensures that the adjustment remains stable and secure once set.
